Male Gynecomastia

The Chest Coach System Contents

In a way the heading is a little odd because gynecomastia is a male disease so to put ‘male’ in front of it is not necessary. However, the search terms that people use in Google, Yahoo etc., are many and varied. Others are ‘gynecomastia male’, ‘gynacomastia’, ‘gynocomastia’ and ‘gynomastia’. So if you’ve typed in any of these keywords, welcome! It is not always easy to spell medical words properly is it? As a fitness instructor myself, I have to check and double-check such words.

In my work at the Health Club I have come into contact with several young and many not-so-young men with male gynecomastia. In addition there have been many with ‘Pseudogynecomastia’ which is false gynecomastia but is often confused with the true condition. What’s the difference? Well, in layman’s terms:

  • Gynecomastia is the abnormal growth of glandular tissue on the male breast. This may sometimes be small, right under the nipple or underlying the whole breast.
  • Pseudogynecomastia is simply a build-up of fatty tissue in the male breast and is usually found on overweight and obese guys.

See ‘The Chest Coach System’ for one man’s story

From my observations as a fitness instructor, most of the men with enlarged breasts that I have encountered fall in the second category and did not have male gynecomastia. Therefore, if you are in doubt, do visit your doctor for his diagnosis.

If all you have is pseudogynecomastia, a structured exercise program, alongside dietary and lifestyle adjustments, will, if adhered to, remedy what you thought was male gynecomastia.

If your physician has diagnosed you as suffering from male gynecomastia, he will need to investigate further to ascertain the cause or causes. The imbalance between Androgen and Estrogen, which gives rise to these unsightly 'man boobs', can be attributed to 1 or more of several factors. These are as follows:

  • Puberty itself can give rise to male gynecomastia[although in 93% of cases it disappears within 3 years].
  • Some drugs or medications can alter liver function causing causing secondary feminising effects.
  • Marijuana causes hormonal imbalance leading to male gynecomastia.
  • Steroid abuse causes ‘aromatisation’ which is the body reacting to the extra testosterone and changing it into a female hormone, mainly estrogen.
  • Excess alcohol intake interferes with the hormonal balance.
  • Aging effects where testosterone production decreases as a guy gets older.
  • Testicular tumours.
  • Adrenal carcinoma.
  • Hermaphroditism[having the organs of both sexes].
  • Kleinfelters Syndrome.
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
  • Melatonine.

Remedies for male gyecomastia include lipoplasty, more invasive surgery, hormone re-balancing treatment, exercise, dietary and lifestyle adjustments.
